Each spring, from late March to mid-April, flocks of Smith's Longspurs pass through Iowa on their way to the Arctic tundra nesting grounds. Although they be found in any number of areas, two of the most reliable have been in southern Johnson and northern Louisa Counties. Both locations combine nicely with a trip to Cone Marsh to make for a delightful day of early spring birding. Please remember that the following locations are private property. Respect property rights and bird from the roads. Location 1 is north and west of the town of Lone Tree. Drive the rock roads in this area, stopping occasionally to scan the fields. The birds may sometimes be seen coming in for water. Location 2 is just east of Cone Marsh. The fields along here are sandy and there are frequently visible longspur flocks - both Smith's and Laplands. Fencerows sometimes offer perched birds which allow good scope views. |
